Drill - Smart and sharp
Drill

There are several main points about doing drill. The first thing about drill is that it should not be viewed as punishment or a bad thing - drill is there to build good qualities such as discipline and teamwork.

The second point is that to do drill effectively, smartly and correctly you must be fairly relaxed. Not quite horizontal, but relaxed - too much concentration will lead to you messing up.

The third point is that you must know how to do drill. Seems obvious, but drill is based on timings, and if you do not know these, you cannot do drill. Initial instruction should have been in the form of carrying out drill movements by numbers - this teaches the basic sub-movements involved in each manoeuvre.

After by numbers, you should move on to the stage known as judging the timming. This is as it sounds - you judge the timing for the manoeuvre in your head. This can only be done when you know the timing. The timings for basic drill manouvres are found in ACP 19 Chapter 1 Annex 1.

In order for you do drill correctly, it is an idea to read through some of the basic foot drill section of the Drill Manual available by clicking on the link. Oh, and practice makes perfect!

Drill Myths

There is no such thing as the left dress - this is wrong! ACP 19 clearly states the left dress is an acceptable manouevre.

The left and right wheels are carried out by the inside ranking taking 6 steps on the same spot - this is wrong! The wheel should be carried out around a circular arc of radius 120cms (4 feet) with the inside marker stepping short for 6 paces.

The order in the sizing manoeuvre is “from the right number” - this is wrong! The order is simply “Squad number”.
